40 Bags in 40 Days – Declutter & Simplify Challenge

40 bags in 40 days - Our Rosey LifeI am so excited to be starting this season again… the Lenten season.  Lent is about the preparation for a joyous Easter celebration.  Lent is a season for prayer, sacrifice and charity.  As a family, we have some things we’re going to do during Lent to prepare for Easter and I’ll be sharing our plans over the week.

First up is 40 bags in 40 days, a challenge to simplify and declutter our home and our life.  Last year was the second time I participated in 40 bags in 40 days (you can read about it here).  I didn’t actually count the number of bags of stuff we donated or tossed in the garbage.  It was a lot though.

And counting wasn’t really the point for me.  Our Lenten commitment was to declutter and simplify our home and our life… to sacrifice the time to do something “fun” and instead sort, purge, clean, and organize for 40 days.  The goal was to tackle different rooms in our home and choose the things, the stuff, the junk we don’t need in our lives or didn’t love.  When possible, we made donations to local charities.  Otherwise we recycled or trashed the junk.  It was a super-sized spring cleaning session!

Now if you ask our then 7 year old, she l-o-v-e-s everything in her room, so that was a little tricky.   But one year later, she can’t even name one thing that we donated from her room and hopefully some other 7 year old girl is loving her dolly.  Good to remember this year.

Have nothing in your house quote - Our Rosey LifeSo we start the journey again on Ash Wednesday to eliminate the stuff in our home that isn’t useful or beautiful.  Each day for 40 days, we (or I) will tackle a different closet, drawer, room, or shelf in our home with the goal of simplifying and decluttering our home and our life.  By eliminating the unnecessary, we make more space for Jesus and prayer and family.

I made another list this year of the spaces I want to tackle.  Yes, I’m still a “to do” list gal!  Sunday is a day for family, prayer and rest, so Sunday’s are open.  Spring break also falls during Lent.  Even though I’m a list girl, I like to be spontaneous.  I slotted in some “free pick days”, because some days I want the flexibility and to move where the moment (or mess) takes me.40 Bags in 40 Days-Simplify & Declutter Challenge - Our Rosey Life

I will share our progress, so be sure to follow along on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. #40bagsin40days  If you decide to join the 40 bags in 40 days challenge to declutter and simplify, please share your progress too.  #40bagsin40days

And as we simplify and declutter during this Lenten season, I will reflect on Psalm 23:2-3.  Psalm 23:2 and Hydrangea - Our Rosey Life

  1. What a fabulous idea Michele! How much were you able to declutter last year?

    • We decluttered a lot, but we’ve had a whole year to reclutter (Is this even a word?) some spaces. Especially with little kids, they grow out of certain toys and clothes and such. More work to do again.

  2. I’m doing this too! It feels so good to get rid of stuff. i didn’t do too well last year, but I’m thrilled with the progress so far this year!
